Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is a movie set inside the Harry Potter universe. It was released in the UK and US on 18th November 2016.
Potterheads (people with good taste in books/film) will know that 'Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them' is a textbook that Harry, Ron and Hermione use during their Care of Magical Creatures studies at Hogwarts from 1991 to 1997. The 'Fantastic Beasts' film, however, is set in 1926, so can be said to be a 'prequel' of the events of 'Harry Potter'. Also, it takes place in New York City rather than Hogwarts/various locations in the UK unlike the first eight of the films in the 'Harry Potter' series.
The film's main character is Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) who ends up writing the 'Fantastic Beasts' textbook. By mistake, he swaps his suitcase full of magical creatures with non-wizard (muggle to UK wizards, or No-Maj to US wizards) Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), leading to some of the creatures being released onto the streets. The film tells of Newt's attempts to recapture the creatures and his encounters with people he meets along the way including ex-Auror Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) and her sister Queenie (Alison Sudol). The situation is amplified by tense relations between the wizarding and non-wizarding communities, both being intolerant of each other, and the fear of exposing the wizarding world.
FANTASTIC BEASTS FANTASTIC FACTS
(spoilers, sorry)
J.K. Rowling has actually published the 'Fantastic Beasts' book; it was released in 2001 for charity. It is merely a guidebook to accompany the main 'Harry Potter' series though and doesn't bear any relation to the film's plot.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is J.K. Rowling's screenwriting debut.
Newt Scamander was sorted into Hufflepuff house in Hogwarts but was expelled.
Newt's grandson, Rolf Scamander, ends up marrying Luna Lovegood, a friend of Harry Potter.
The film makes reference to the Salem Witch Trials which took part in Massachusetts in the 1690s; it was these events which underlie the the wizarding community's reluctance to be discovered by Muggles/No-Maj.
There is a plan for four more films to be released in the Fantastic Beasts series, starting from 1926 until 1945.
One of my friends happened to stumble across the London premiere of Fantastic Beasts, and bumped into J.K. Rowling. She managed to see the cast on the red carpet despite not buying a ticket or anything. xD
EXTRA BONUS VIDEO FROM FAYE
Here is a Youtube 'PSA' from Eddie Redmayne which is about how he's proud to be a Hufflepuff (as his character Newt Scamander also is), if you're interested please watch haha
Has anyone seen the film, and if so what do you think? Did it live up to your expectations?
The DVD and Blu-Ray of Fantastic Beasts is set to be released in April 2017.
